If Amex is listening, there are many Canadian Platinum cardholders who would be happy with a further annual fee increase (say, $999, $1299 or even higher) and have conditions for receiving signup bonuses such as spending after 3 or more years before receiving any bonus. I personally wish Amex would raise the Canadian Platinum annual fee even higher, to reduce the number of 'churners' even more and curb the number of people who only sign up for the card for the signup bonus only to cancel after a couple of years. So comparing the Canadian Platinum to the USA Platinum, in hopes that the Canadian Platinum will be as 'good' as the USA Platinum's Offers is wishful thinking and a flawed argument. That is the only reason why more offers are provided to Platinum USA cardholders. Also, the USA has a significantly higher number of financial institutions which offer credit card products, compared to the number of financial institutions in Canada. The high-spend Platinum cardholders couldn't care less how many other people have the card.Īs to the point you make about the USA version of the Platinum card being more common, the reason is due to the number of cardholders/population in the USA. These cardholders do not care to save a few dollars on an Offer or discount.Īs for the point about Platinum being a luxury high end card, this illusion is simply created by most of the low-spending Platinum cardholders in Canada. The higher spend Canadian Platinum cardholders who make up the majority of spend on the card in Canada spend much more every month. Nor are they overly concerned with how much money is generated from interchange fees from the Canadian cardholders who fall into your category of "one of the most common Amex that people hold."Įven though there may be a notable number of Platinum cardholders in Canada, most of them do NOT spend very much on the card - I would guess less than $5000 per month. Amex is not concerned with the 'churners' or the people who intend on just keeping the card for a year or two. My point is more in regards to the actual spend of Canadian Amex Platinum cardholders who make up the majority of dollars spent on the Platinum card.
